Welcome to SL #10! In this show, we are joined by Joey Silver and Doug Spear of DLA Piper for a discussion around DLA’s new Venture Pipeline program for entrepreneurs, as well as some legal basics for early-stage entrepreneurs.

As an added bonus, we throw linear-thinking serial entrepreneurs “under the bus” , and we learned how to find attorneys to help you smuggle gold bullion out of Nigeria. A can’t miss show!

Shownotes:

Besides learning all about DLA Piper’s new Venture Pipeline program (which is very, very cool), we had a great chat around some of the basics of working with an attorney in an early-stage mode. When should you hire an attorney? How do you negotiate fees? Can you? How do you choose a law firm that makes sense for you as a startup? Big law or boutique? What specifically should an entrepreneur expect their attorney to help them with?

Tune in and find out!

Our format is a little out of the norm as far as podcasts go. We treat our efforts as a true “show” rather than a super-concise (limited) vehicle for delivery of information. Therefore, the podcasts can run a bit long. While we try to have very substantive discussions, we also try to have a lot of fun along the way (and that tends to elongate the programming a wee bit.) :) Our theory is that if we are having fun during the show, hopefully, you will be having a little fun listening as well.

Here is the breakdown for the show, in case you want to hop around.

Intro 00:00 to 01:24
Smalltalk and introductions: 01:24 to 05:48
Under the Bus 03:45 to 11:03
Announcements/Mailbag: 11:03 to 21:46
Commercial/Comedy Break: 21:46 to 25:39
Main Discussion Topic 25:39 to 73:13
Commercial/Comedy Break: 73:13 to 73:57
Analysis/Wrap-up: 73:57 to 77:53

A special thanks to Joey and Doug for coming in and hanging out with us!

We’ll be back soon with Tim Westergren from Pandora.com. Given the recent developments with the RIAA and online music licensing, you won’t want to miss this show. In addition to chatting about that, we’ll talk about Tim’s survival story from the dot com flameout.

We welcome your continued feedback as well! If you have an interest in appearing on the show, becoming a show sponsor (hint, hint), have some suggestions for topics, have feedback, or would just like to email us and tell us to “shove off”, we invite you to contact us.

And don’t forget – the StartupLounge.com message forums are up and running. If you need help with any aspect of your venture, we welcome you to jump in and get the help you need!

Enjoy!

Really good podcast containing some helpful information. I will recommend this to my friends! I would have liked to have learned more about this Venture Pipeline program though (like how a startup can get involved in it?)
